Nonfiction Short Review Extravaganza #4: Herbal Remedies, Spirituality, Health and Cookbook

Nonfiction Short Review Extravaganza #4: Herbal Remedies, Spirituality, Health and Cookbook

Dr. Sebi Bible Ancient Wisdom and Holistic Pharmacist by Kai Omari

For Rick Sterling

Dr. Sebi Bible’s Ancient Wisdom and Holistic Pharmacist is an insightful and educational guide towards holistic practices that are meant to give physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

The volume is six books in one. The first two books are introductory defining what holistic healing is particularly Alkaline diets. Book 1 discusses what natural healing actually is and why it serves as a contrast to conventional healing practices such as pharmaceuticals. For example, natural remedies address and manage the root symptoms, not the causes. They also allow them to be filtered out naturally instead of being suppressed. The book also addresses causes like food, environment, and stress. The book focuses on specific parts of the body like the gut and mucus and how they can be affected by a weakened immunity.

Book 2 addresses The Alkaline Mindset and Lifestyle. This is a gradual approach that requires belief, and long-term consistency and commitment. The book discusses the long-term transition steps like eating alkaline foods like leafy greens, cucumbers, avocados, alkaline water. Besides trying healthy foods, the book offers other suggestions like meditation, writing a gratitude journal, engaging in meaningful activities, and having a supportive community. The book covers various processes like eliminating toxic and acidic substances like processed foods and additional additives and chemicals. Daily and monthly detox schedules are included such as enhancing kidneys function with electrolytes and drinking herbal tea for dandelion, milk thistle, and ginger tea. Monthly detox such as creating an action plan for purchasing the right foods and making time for meditation.

Book 3 is an Encyclopedia of various herbs arranged by healing properties such as Sarsaparilla for Blood purification and detox, Pau D’Arco for Immune Support System, Ginger Root for Digestion and Gut Health, Devil’s Claw for Anti-inflammatory and Pain Relief, St. John’s Wort for Antiviral and Infection Defense, Nopal Cactus for Blood Sugar Regulation and Diabetes Support, Vitex for Hormonal Balance & Women’s Health, Ashwagandha for Energy and Stress Relief, Cayenne Pepper for Heart and Health Circulation. Each chapter includes a description of the benefits of the herb, traditional uses, where they can be found, how they can be used and stored, step by step instructions on how to prepare them, potential contraindications, results over time, and recipe variation.

Book 4 consists of Alkaline recipes including Alkaline Coconut-Quinoa Porridge for Breakfast, Alkaline Cucumber-Avocado Salad for Lunch, Zucchini Noodles with Avocado Sauce for Dinner, Spiced Apple Crumble for Desserts, Banana Date Energy Balls for Snacks, and Carrot Turmeric Cleansing Juice for Smoothies.

Book 5 includes Herbal Remedies beyond food. Each section describes what the remedy is, how to prepare it, various techniques, and the uses of essential remedies, and tips including dosage, storage, and safety. Recipes include Echinacea Root Tincture for Tincture, Pau D’Arco Bark for Decoction and Syrup Recipes, Chamomile Poultice for Skin Irritation for Poultices and Compresses, and Peppermint Eucalyptus Steam for Herbal Bath and Steams.

The final book, Book 6 discusses the Detoxification Protocol and its foundations. It illustrates how mucus is a key factor in health problems. The Alkaline diet, herbal support, and lifestyle changes like exercises and short-term intermittent fasting combats and eliminates mucus build up.Various detox pathways are mentioned like liver, kidneys, and the lymphatic system. Each section is described with functions, suggested foods, hydration, and other suggestions on how to optimize good health into these specific important organs. The final section recognizes the importance of detoxification to the skin.Therapeutic approaches including gentle cleansing, hydration, nutritional support, emollients and moisturizers, exfoliation, and lifestyle practices such as physical activity, sweating, ultraviolet protection, and sleep are incredibly important.

The Dr. Sebi Bible’s Ancient WIsdom and Holistic Pharmacist tells Readers everything that they need to know about natural remedies, Alkaline dieting, and living a holistic healthy life.

The Books of Enoch (Audible)
For Rick Sterling
The Books of Enoch is a fascinating Biblical ancient apocalyptic religious text. It is mythology mixed with spirituality. It is entirely told from the point of view of Enoch, who the Bible describes as “one who walked with God” and ascended to Heaven without dying.

It focuses on many details that are minimized in the Canonical Bible such as putting more emphasis on the story of the fallen angels. They were punished for lying with human women, breeding half-human giant children, and teaching them forbidden knowledge.

It also includes details about Noah's youth and relationships with his father Lamech, grandfather Methuselah, and great grandfather Enoch. His strange appearance such as eyes that lit up at night caused Lamech to question his paternity ( Methuselah told him that his features were signs of being divinely inspired and that he was biologically human and Lamech's son.)

Unlike the Canon Bible which puts the apocalyptic visions in the end of the Bible with the Book of Revelation, The Books of Enoch puts it right at the beginning. The placement of the Apocalypse in the first chapter of the first book shows how important these visions are to the text.

The Audible version is narrated by James Burke. His is a soothing calming voice that reads the Books with deep understanding, wisdom, and faith in the text.

In a post-Apocalyptic future, Fren Welp and his father, Sven are attacked in their village by beasts from a far away kingdom. After a fight in which Fren is threatened and a family friend has been kidnapped, father and son travel to the kingdom to face their sworn enemies. Unfortunately, the fight becomes personal when they learn that some of the kingdom’s subjects are closer to them than they originally thought.

There is a strong sense of survival. Sven and Fren exhibit a “kill or be killed” mentality. They live a hard, difficult life in which they have to fight against animals, other humans, even former friends and family members.

The society in The Young is an agrarian society that has deteriorated into small enclaves or tribes, mostly just specific families and even they can be divided. We learn that  Fren’s mother and brother disappeared. Their reappearance is not a happy reunion as they no longer recognize the family members that they left behind.

Despite The Young carrying a theme of survival through adversity and decline in society, it is not completely dour. Heart and warmth lie within the relationship between Sven and Fren.Lacking anything else in life, all they have is each other.

The Young is dark with its theme of survival but light with the love between its deuteragonists. It shows even during the worst times, it's important to have someone to hold onto, care for, guide, help, and love.

The Super Easy Good Energy Diet Cookbook for Beginners: 150+ Tasty & Nutritious Recipes Inspired by Dr. Casey Means’ Teachings to Help You Lose Weight and Eat Healthier by Astrid T. Rasmussen

The Super Easy Good Energy Cookbook for Beginners is an excellent book that offers good recipes to increase energy levels and cultivate healthy eating habits.

The introduction covers Dr. Casey Means’ Dietary Philosophy which the book uses as its primary inspiration. Means endorsed a holistic approach to nutrition, focusing on the interconnectedness of metabolic health, inflammation, and overall well-being. Among the aspects that Means emphasized include low-glycemic eating, individual metabolic responses to foods, and using whole foods as a cornerstone. Among the tools are Continuous Glucose Monitoring by measuring glucose in real time and identifying sugar spikes.

The book gives a biography that lists Means’ experiences, research, philosophies, and guidelines that are implemented into the Good Energy Diet. The diet eliminates refined sugar, processed grains, and unhealthy fats and the inclusion of high-fiber foods, healthy fats, probiotic-rich foods, and micronutrient-dense foods. Lifestyle is also important in maintaining the Good Energy Diet by doing physical activity, getting enough sleep, and managing stress levels.

The introduction also provides case studies of people whose health improved by implementing the diet into their lives. Mary struggled with metabolic issues such as obesity, fatigue, and elevated blood sugar levels. Within a few months of committing to the diet, her energy improved, blood sugar levels stabilized, and she lost weight. There are similar studies like John who used the diet to improve his blood pressure and cholesterol levels and Lisa whose diet helped her manage her Depression and Anxiety.

Like any other cookbook, the recipes offer a good variety of excellent choices for healthy eating and living. They include: Banana Oat Muffins for Breakfast, Beef and Bell Pepper Stir Fry for Beef, Pork, and Lamb, Fresh Rosemary Chicken for Poultry, Curry-Glazed Salmon with Quinoa for Fish and Seafood, Cold Soup Smoothie for Snacks and Appetizers, Smashed Potatoes with Dried Herbs for Vegetables and Sides, Papaya Rice Bowls for Vegetarian Mains, Easy Summer Gazpacho for Stews and Soups, Greek Salads with Lemon-Orange Vinaigrette for Salads, Almond Butter Fudge with Chocolate Sauce for Desserts, and Whole-Wheat Pizza Dough for Staples, Sauces, Dips, and Dressings.

Cicadas: A Summer Story by Jenna Putnam

With its brief length, seasonally appropriate setting, and its heated love shape, Cicadas makes for perfect summertime reading.

Anouk has been having an affair with Michael, a married man. Don't worry, he says, it's an open marriage. Things become more complicated when Anouk meets and befriends Michaels wife, Marina and she is invited to join them on a summer retreat with another couple where the pairings and affairs become more complex and convoluted.

The novella is short, 46 pages, so it doesn’t have a lot of time to dwell on anything more than the important plot points. When it does, it makes for a very emotional passion driven read. We get some background information about how Anouk and Michael’s affair started and how she was put into Marina’s confidence enough for her to confide a painful family secret to her husband’s mistress. There is also time to pull other people into the triangle to further complicate things as other lovers are revealed and one character’s infatuation for another becomes volatile and obsessive.

Even though we are given very little because of the brief length, what we are given makes the various parts of this love triangle plus other shapes interesting. Most of the hidden depths and motivations of the characters are suggested rather than outright stated. For example, learning about a loss within Michael’s family turns him from a devil may care philanderer to a pathetic sod drifting away from his wife and trying to hold onto anything to give him feeling. He inspires lust, understanding, empathy, and irritation all at once.

Anouk herself goes through a painful journey of self awareness. She begins the affair incredibly naive and lost in her emotions, believing that she needs to be in a relationship no matter how many red flags that she sees. She knows that having an affair with a married man could lead to trouble but she wants to believe Michael’s excuses and ignores Marina’s existence. That works until she meets and begins to like her. Suddenly that unspoken guilt has a face and a name. The turning point occurs during the vacation and Anouk sees Michael for who he really is. She loses the illusions that she once had of being in a romantic relationship and makes changes towards her own life. After her romantic illusions are shattered, Anouk is able to find the independence and self-awareness to leave the situation with the knowledge that she doesn’t need to be in a relationship to feel complete.

Besides the character’s journeys and brief length, what makes Cicadas ideal summer reading is the setting. For a story drenched in love affairs and hidden passions, the setting is rather apt. Anouk’s first look at Michael and Marina’s vacation home is as follows: “The summer house was everything that Anouk had imagined. Huge Spanish archways, walls covered in ivy, a balcony overlooking wild greenery that stretched all the way to the ocean. On one side of the house was a gazebo with four wooden posts and a tarnished picnic-style table beneath it. She thought of all the dinners that had taken place there, all the people Michael and Marina seduced and danced with under the moonlight.”

The book is filled with summertime imagery: sunshine, heat, cool water, outdoor picnics, dancing under the moonlight, beach houses, and longer days. Even the title, Cicadas, lends itself to that because cicadas are insects that mate every seven to fourteen years and make plenty of noise while doing so. 2024 is particularly notable for this because both the 7 and 14 year cicadas made their appearances.

Everything in the book calls to mind a time of fun and passion. Sometimes, like the weather, a romance becomes hot and uncomfortable and you have to get away from it into the cool breeze of a safe air conditioned home. However, there is a constant awareness that summer is a brief fleeting time of three months of the year. It is only temporary. The cicadas do their mating calls for a couple of weeks then go underground. Sometimes passion and romance is temporary. What was once exciting and sexual gets cooled off when faced with reality. Summer becomes autumn and one is left with the options of staying in a relationship that may not work or finding the courage to leave it.

The Republic of Plato Book 1: Views on Justice by G. McLaughlin

G. McLaughlin’s novella, The Republic of Plato, offers a condensed and simple way of remembering the Ancient Greek philosopher’s teachings: through verse.

The first volume, Views on Justice, interprets the teachings of Plato’s mentor, Socrates into rhyming couplets. In four chapters, the philosopher offers lessons on “Justice as Honesty in Word and Deed,” “Justice as Helping Friends and Harming Enemies,” “Justice as the Interest of the Stronger,” and “Justice is More Profitable than Injustice.”

The rhyme scheme is simple with  couplets at the end of each line. (“Socrates was walking down the mountain from a festival of lights/A group of children came up smiling with laughter and delight.”) It reads almost like a kid’s guide to philosophy or a book by Dr. Seuss. Readers who are unfamiliar with philosophy may find this approach helpful as it condenses the philosophies in a way that is engaging and easily understood.

While the rhyme scheme is simple, the discussions are complex.  Socrates talks to a friend or student about a specific question and gives his answer based on examples. This allows Readers to pay attention to the questions that are posed and the answers that are given. For example, Polemarchus, a belligerent student asks if telling the truth and paying debts are the right way.

Socrates expands the other man’s thinking by offering situational challenges like whether people from different occupations may not earn the same as others should be treated differently or whether there are different standards between friends and enemies. Just like many philosophical questions, there are no right or wrong answers. They are often designed to challenge superficial perspectives and think critically and deeply about what we have previously believed.

The Republic of Plato is a fun and engaging way to learn about Socrates and Plato and their philosophies. These questions on justice are ones that are still thought about today and this book presents interesting perspectives on them.

The Country Living Bible 5-in-1: The Definitive Homesteading for Peppers to Live and Thrive Off the Grid|Including Survival Skills to Stay Independent, Safe, and Healthy by Jake L. Bryan

Some people dream of living a simple life off the grid. Whether they are concerned about the destruction of the environment, are distrustful of government overreach, have religious or cultural reasons, are nostalgic for the past, or just simply crave a slower pace, living off the grid is a sought for dream. Jake L. Bryan’s The Country Living Bible is an ultimate guide for those who long for a simpler life in a complicated world.

The book is actually five books in one that takes Readers through the various facets on rural living. It includes chapters on selecting and building a homestead, growing, preparing, and storing food, emergency preparedness, survival skills, energy and water solutions, home maintenance and repairs, safety and security strategies, and holistic, alternative, and natural medicines and remedies. This is a book that caters to one’s physical, mental, and emotional well being while undertaking such a monumental task.

Many of the chapters stress simplicity and living off of the land. High prices at the grocery store? Grow your own food. Concerned about increased carbon footprints? Use solar, hydro, and wind energy. Concerned about the constant stream of technology and misinformation? Use public WiFi services like the library or pay for a limited basic connection. This book gives clear directions and step-by-step processes on how to do such things.

Some of the more interesting parts include sections that talk about security and health services. The security chapters cover such things as monitoring and using surveillance around the properties. Above all, an important factor is to trust the neighboring community to assist in protection. People assume living off the grid means living completely separately and away from everyone else, but Bryan shows that the strongest off the gridders actually have thriving communities where people communicate and work together.

The health section includes various plants and herbs for remedies, fitness routines for exercise, and stress management techniques to improve mental health. While it offers advice on how to apply first aid and treatments for simple illnesses and injuries, it doesn’t dismiss medical treatment offhand. By all means, it says if there is a complex injury or a serious illness, contact emergency services immediately. It’s nice to know that even though one desires to live outside of modern society, the modern society is still there in case help is needed.

Off the grid living is not recommended for everyone. But for those that are interested and are willing to pursue it, this book is a strategic helpful guide on how to get started.
